Maria is the female lead in the opera. She is never seen in the game herself, but her character in the opera shares her name. The player's primary interaction in the opera itself is memorizing her speech and inputting the correct lines as she sings about Draco's absence. She is being forced to marry Ralse, but Draco arrives to duel him. However, since Locke and Ultros fall on her two suitors, knocking them unconscious, and Setzer abducts Celes, who was playing Maria, the opera's intended ending, and the true Maria's whereabouts are unknown. The game makers also seem to have made a reference to the musical West Side Story; at one point in the opera, Draco sings "Mariaaaa" in a seemingly exaggerated way, such as was done in West Side Story.
