Mae Trix – Ball-Jointed Crocheted Doll

This is Mae Trix. She’s a phenomenon. *end obligatory Shock Treatment reference*

A few things about Mae:

* She is slightly over 4ft tall, meant to be around 2/3 actual size — the chairs she’s sitting in are human-sized. She is strung with 3/8th inch elastic and is fully pose-able. When sitting upright as she is shown here, her torso is self-supporting.

* She is made mostly of yarn and stuffing, from a crochet pattern entirely of my design (that I hope to format nicely and sell someday). She also contains elastic stringing as mentioned, pipe insulation wrapped in duct tape (to make bones/feet), plastic canvas, coat hooks (as the internal connections for the stringing), and wire in her hands and fingers.

* She weighs around 8-10 pounds. Her torso has a realistic human range of movement in all directions, with internal rib cage and upper/lower abdominal masses, along with a pipe insulation “spine”. All areas with stuffing have at least two layers of crochet work, to prevent the stuffing from ever becoming visible. The most amount of layers would probably be in her back, where in places she has up to 7 layers of crochet over internal stuffing.

* Her hair and face are removable (currently attached via bobby pins) to allow for changes of expression and hairstyle.

* The bra and undies in the beanbag picture are new; I created them this weekend as a commission. When I get around to making her a set, she’ll of course want them in her favorite color — green!

Dalek – Doctor Who Tribute Doll

Here we have a Dalek from the television show Doctor Who. Note the level of detail in this as well as the fact that the head actually does turn a full 360 degrees. The final piece would up being around 2 feet tall if not taller.

Ralph Hinkley – The Greatest American Hero – Tribute Doll

This is your webmaster composing the write-up for this doll as it’s a very personal one. The Greatest American Hero was a television show that I connected with in a major way as a kid and so Vox was kind enough to create a doll of the main character from the show for me. William Katt (the actor who played him) actually attended a convention nearby so I was able to actually give him the doll in person as a way of showing my appreciation for both the show and for his work. He loved it and it was an amazing experience to get to meet him. Vox did a wonderful job capturing all the details in the costume. Of special note is the care taken with the logo and with the boots. She even got the soles of them perfect.

Demona Ball Jointed Tribute Doll – Gargoyles

This is a ball jointed crocheted doll of Demona from the Gargoyles cartoon. This was a huge project but worth it since she came out amazing. She stands just shy of 5 feet tall and has a 7 and a half foot wingspan!

Lego Mini-Figure Castle Guard

Now this doll is of particular note. It is a Lego mini-figure (that is actually nearly 1.5′ tall!) This one is of one of the castle guard type. It works nearly exactly like an actual mini-figure. The head, helmet, legs/pants, torso and hands are all removable. The legs even have the holes in both the back and the bottom (though they had to be shifted slightly in back due to limitations in the material). Also the hands had to be modified as you can see from the pictures but it still captures the same look and feel as the original mini-figure.

This is a doll of Cid from Final Fantasy VII and also from Final Fantasy Advent Children. This particular version is modeled more on Advent Children than VII however.

The Tortuga Twins: Scaramouche, Raphael and D’Angelo

These are three dolls of our favorite comedy troupe The Tortuga Twins: Scaramouche, Raphael and D’Angelo. These dolls will be presented to the comedians they represent at the Georgia Renaissance Festival on April 14, 2012. Each doll includes vest, trousers, boots, and bell-sleeved shirts separately. The part that took the longest was Raphael’s hair to capture the fierce frosted look that he has going on.

These dolls are tributes to the original characters and are created as a show of gratitude for the laughter they’ve provided over the years. I respect the artistic and intellectual property of the original characters and for that reason these dolls will never be recreated without the property owners’ express permission.

Bender – Futurama

Bender Bending Rodríguez, designated Bending Unit 22, is a fictional robot character in the animated television series Futurama. He was created by series creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen and is voiced by John DiMaggio. In the series, Bender plays the role of a comic anti-hero, and is described by Leela as an “alcoholic, whore-mongering, chain-smoking gambler”. He was built in Mexico and other characters refer to his “swarthy Latin charm”. He is, per his own testimony, prejudiced against non-robots, often expressing an urge to “kill all humans” except his best friend, Fry; however, he has also committed acts of kindness for humans and others, suggesting he is not truly as belligerent as he claims.
